City Council to Discuss Anti-Newspaper Tree Resolution

Two of the most powerful forces in El Paso may be on a collision course: Mayor John “Iron Fist” Cook and El Paso’s own P. Diddy of media, Keith Mahar.
Lately, our friends at Newspaper Tree (NT) have been posting articles that discuss the “politics of pornography,” including one about a film from our friends at Hustler that parodies Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin. Exposing El Paso to such material has drawn the ire of Mayor Cook, who orchestrated City Council’s unanimous passing of the notorious 6-foot rule. “I thought I made it clear when I banned lap dances, but apparently Mr. Mahar didn’t understand the message. Now I need to reiterate. We need to make this place porn free.” On Tuesday, City Council will discuss some sort of anti-NT resolution (details were not available at press time).
The politics of such a move, however, are questionable. Many regard NT as the major local print media in El Paso. Mahar’s company, El Paso Media Group, also publishes the “pro-El Paso” magazine El Pasoan and an online douchebag shrine. In particular, NT is a favorite of City Council’s self-proclaimed progressives, who will be forced to choose between their favorite media outlet and their allegiance to Mayor Cook. A progressive who requested to remain nameless told us, “Yeah, me and Beto are a little concerned. We think the Mayor may be taking it too far with this one. Besides, EMPG has that hot sales girl. I wouldn’t want to piss her off. On the other hand, we don’t want to get called into the Mayor’s office and get ANOTHER lecture.”
