“Whooooa, relax. Put the petition down slowly.”
In case you have not heard, it looks like some people are responding to a comment on this site about people who just piss and moan about their elected officials and express their desire to sign a fictitious petition. Now, it seems that petition may become a reality.
In the comments section of the article linked above, you have several examples of would-be signers. Meanwhile, a site listing “information on locations to sign a recall petition” is still under construction, as is the other site in that same comment. While Mr. Miller is letting out the battle cry, he may be underestimating how lazy people here can be: “I have to go OUT to sign the petition? I just opened up this quart!”
The article also mentions that this group has close to a month and ticking to get this petition filed. To top it off, Mayor Cook should be up for re-election next year. Given how long it took to get an election for District 3 going, I would not be surprised to see this effort fall flat.
In the article, Mayor Cook also expresses his disappointment with this effort, claiming it is not “professional” and that it will hurt economic development. I was not aware that Mayor Cook was responsible for all economic development that has happened here. And apparently, democracy and citizen participation makes Mayor Cook “real disappointed.” Poor guy.
Another memorable quote he gives is, “I think the recall provision in the charter was not meant to handle single issues that you might disagree with somebody over. I think it was really meant to keep you from getting a complete dud or idiot serving for four years.” If I had to guess, I’d say some people have that very opinion of Mayor Cook.
Long story short, this mimics an abusive spouse who promises to stop the abuse once the other person threatens to call the cops. Lets sit back and see if the call is made.
Another funny thing is that it seems nobody was held accountable over the lack of preparation for the so-called “500-year flood.” Usually, after a huge screw up like that, someone gets fired. Perhaps the El Paso Water Utility/Public Service Board had been asking for the stormwater utility for a while.

Looks like the effort is barely getting started: you have to e-mail someone so you can become a signing location. Very weak. These people should give it some real effort and go knocking on doors. Voter lists are public information. Ahh, El Paso…Full of ideas, and nobody to implement them properly.
